LwM2M: firmware updates

Devices with the Firmware Update object (/5) can be updated over the air on the FOTA page: choose a firmware version and one or several devices, start the update and follow each device. Uploading firmware and starting updates is limited to administrators; everyone can follow the updates.

How an update runs

  1. Download: the server writes the Package URI (/5/0/1). The device downloads the image from coaps://164.30.75.205:41300 in CoAP blocks of up to 512 bytes, over DTLS with the same key as for LwM2M (identity = endpoint name).
  2. Downloaded: the device checks the image and reports state 2. The update waits here until it is installed: with Install now on the FOTA page, or right away with install automatically.
  3. Install: the server executes Update (/5/0/2). The device installs the image and restarts.
  4. Done: the device registers again; the server checks the Update Result (/5/0/5, 1 = success) and the new Software Version (/3/0/19).

A failed download or installation is shown with the device's Update Result in words, e.g. not enough flash memory, integrity check failed or invalid URI. An update can be cancelled until it is installed.

Firmware images

Upload the image file the device's bootloader expects, e.g. the signed app_update.bin of an nRF Connect SDK build. For MCUboot images the version is read from the image header.
